History of Old Town UMC (Submitted By
Nancy Hammer, church historian)
In 1853
the trustees of Old Town Episcopal Methodist church purchased land from
Abner Reed (owner of the flax mill) for $75.00. Bricks for the structure
were made on site and the building rose. Major repair and remodeling was
done in 1914 and 1924. In 1950 a basement was excavated under the building
and the first furnace and bathrooms were installed. In 2000 a steeple was
erected and dedicated to Herman Swanener, a life long member.
